Julie’s Journal

Hi My name is Julie, I’m volunteering at The OKA House this summer and I’m working on my High school portfolio for Capa.

We Went to sacred heart today. Sacred heart is like a nursing home for elderly people who have cancer  & are near the end oftheir life. I Was Partnered with Sister Ambrose while working on the legacy quilt. She fell asleep while coloring so Gloria had to wake her up. We Talked to Rachel, A Woman who works at sacred heart, about what the OKA house was about and what we do during the summer.  She seemed really excited about our goals for the summer and our mission. When we got back to the OKA house we did a collage with Faith And I Based mine on the word “Legacy”.  Miss Michaelanne Told us we didn’t have to ride bikes today and i was so happy ; I Hated yesterdays bike ride. We played Uno after working on our collage and Faith and Gloria won.

Bike Ride Around Hunting Park

Hello, My name is Gloria ♥, I am 16 :]

Photo of us Getting Ready for our Bike Ride

Today at OKA we took a bike ride for our exercise. It was fun until a huge bee attacked me while I was riding the bike and then it just all went down hill from there, literally. We began to drive on big roads that consisted of huge hills that were very tiring going uphill but fun when coming down from them. It was a GREAT exercise and I cant wait for the next ride tomorrow. Also today we had a great activity that Faith coordinated for us. She placed mirrors in front of each of us and told us that we would be doing a self portrait but instead of using lines we used words. Everyone’s portrait came out looking OUTstanding. Mine doesn’t exactly look like me but I’ll  be getting better soon.

Adventures with Senior Citizens in Hunting Park.

My name is Abigail and I’m 15 years old. I’m a workready student at O.K.A . So far I’ve had many memorable moments.

Thanks to the adventures at  the O.K.A house I got to visit the Sacred Heart Home, where I meet Ray. He had a WaWa hoagie fest shirt on, and a big smile with a big hearted personality. Ray really enjoys the Phillies,  and he is enjoying life even though he suffers from bone cancer. Now thanks to that experience I now see that every moment in life counts, and I’m going to make the most of it. Abby OUT !

Point Of View, by Anthony Perez, age 15

My name is Anthony, I am a WorkReady student at O.K.A. this summer. During a reflection exercise last week I came up with this poem about  how a person might view the world:

Although I see the world, I find myself blind.

I usually see with my eyes rather than my mind and heart.

We talk, the words exchanged but the sight we share blurs.

Sometimes I wish I could read minds so that I can truly understand others.

I stand alone. The rain washes away the confusion, anger, and misunderstanding.

What’s left is moist pavement, ready for a fresh step .

I step out of the shadows into the bright sun, clouds no longer around to block it.

Now the son is free to shine and his judgement no longer is blocked by storm clouds

He is free to shine brightly above all that holds him down.

Messages in Motion Workshops @ OKA

Laura Deutch from Messages in Motion writes about her 3 workshops at the OKA House:

“I have started a series of 3 Saturday workshops at Orange Korner Arts community center with a group of 5 women. These workshops were the first attempt to address the security/safe spaces theme. I was excited about working with OKA because the converted house is a safe space where community members, youth, adults and families can gather and take different types of creative classes.”
