On Friday, April 16th, we received the news that our dear friend and neighbor, Luis Hernandez, had passed away.  Luis, who lived with his wife on the 600 block of W. Annsbury Street in Hunting Park, was a tremendous neighbor, husband, and father in every way and we will all miss him.  Some of you will remember him from his support and work for the Hunting Park Community Garden and Ayuda’s art projects.  He was a humble man; our time spent with him is cherished.  In his final days, he had many words of care and love for his family as well as the quiet, sure joy of the presence of God in his illness.

Some of you also know that the mural (pictured above) painted for the garden featuring portraits of Luis, Andy Nolan – Community Gardner, and Jeff Manson – Block Captain suffered damage last winter.  At the request of Carmen, Luis’ wife, we are currently taking up donations for the repair and re-installation of the mural this summer.  Carmen expressed her desire to have Luis’s legacy remain as evidenced in the mural as well as her desire to see the face of her husband each morning from her front stoop.

If you would like to give a donation toward the restoration of this mural to celebrate Luis’s legacy and impact on his block and on all of us, CLICK HERE and designate “In Memory of Luis”.  And please keep his wife, Carmen, and their children in prayer.
