Inspired by our neighborhood poet and Block Captain, Gregory Upshaw (pictured above), Ayuda welcomed Jessie van Eerden this spring to teach a Poetry Writing Workshop. We followed up with OKA’s first OPEN MIC NIGHT which was great fun and we would love to host more!  It was exciting to see poets of all ages share their work.  We have also hosted workshops on Painting, Health & Home Remedies, Art History, and look forward to our closing workshops in Jewelry Making and Ceramic Tile Making.  Click the photo above to see more of our workshops in action.

In closing, I will share with you a poem written at the Poetry Writing Workshop.  This was written by an 11 year old girl in our art program.  She came to the workshop straight from her great-grandfather’s funeral and here is what she wrote:

Breeze run between my ears
Clouds are rumbling, somebody
is calling me from the sky telling
me to come on up here. I ask myself
should I go to be in a better place
or stay and live the rest of my life.
